Nearly 30 C and ideal conditions for testing

The 2009 season has only just ended - but the preparations for the 2010 ATS Formula 3 already are running flat out. One of the drivers looking for a cockpit in the fastest German single-seater series is Willi Steindl. The 17-year old Austrian who lives in Kirchberg near Kitzbuhel wants to go for it, next year. Therefore, he now has tested for the Cup winners, Team Van Amersfoort Racing.

The successful Dutch team had rented the private circuit at Guadix, Spain, located half an hour (by Car) from Granada. Perfect conditions with brilliant sunshine and temperatures of nearly 30o. C expected the multicultural Formula 3 squad. For two days, the circuit was made exclusively available to Team Van Amersfoort Racing. The tests in the last week of October were contested with two Formula 3 cars as well as one ADAC Formula Masters and one Formula Renault vehicle.

"With its length of just 2.7 kilometres the circuit is very short," reveals Willi Steindl. "At the same time, driving there is extremely difficult as the track is very narrow and twisting." For the test, team and driver focused on continuous improvement instead of trying to be fast right away. "For me, it was the top priority to damage the car in absolutely no case and avoiding making any other stupid mistakes. Therefore, I opted for a careful approach and focused on learning and improving step by step to be fast at the end," Willi Steindl describes his test programme.

And indeed: at the end of day two, he had clocked a remarkable lap time of 1:08.800 minutes, thus even establishing a new Formula 3 lap record. The old one had been established by reigning ATS Formula 3 Cup Champion Laurens Vanthoor in 2008. "From session one of day one to the first session on day two I improved by some six seconds," the Austrian says proudly. "He completed about 100 laps per day and gathered enough data to offer team and driver the chance of assessing if cooperating in 2010 will make sense.

Willi Steindl: "It goes without saying that I would love to contest the coming season for Van Amersfoort Racing. The team is extremely professional and the atmosphere is extremely familiar, nevertheless. Although I don't speak Dutch I felt really comfortable right away. I'm convinced that I will be able to experience a good 2010 ATS Formula 3 Cup season with Fritz van Amersfoort as my Team Principal. Now I hope that I will be able to secure one of the team's race seats."
