KNIGHT TACKLES AUSTRALIAN FORMULA 3 SERIES ROUND

Christchurch driver Andy Knight will contest Round 6 of the Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship at Phillip Island, south of Melbourne this weekend.

Knight is one of New Zealand's foremost single seater drivers, having finished in the top three of his country's premier single seater category, the Toyota Racing Series, for the past two years. He also made an impressive debut in the US FF2000 Series earlier this year until a lack of funding forced him to return home.

Knight's latest opportunity came about at the last minute when kiwi racing veteran Kenny Smith phoned the Knight family with news of a possible seat in the Australian series. Knight will drive a Renault - Sodemo Dallara F304 for Astuti Motorsport this weekend after the team brought a second Dallara into Australia from Italy. Until this round the team had run a single car in the series for Melbourne driver Michael Trimble. The car Knight will drive only arrived in Australia last Friday.

This weekend will be Knight's first outing in a Formula 3 car and his first visit to Phillip Island, just a stones throw from Bass Strait. His first laps in the car were on Wednesday as he spent his time getting to grips with both a new car and a new circuit. "I didn't have a clue which way the track went before I got here", he said today as he prepared for practice. "I knew the first corner was a right hander and that was about it. The track is quite quick with a couple of blind corners, it's quite different", he said of the 12 - turn, 4.46 kilometre circuit.

The challenge for the 20 - year - old New Zealander this weekend will be to learn the Phillip Island track and the limits of his new car in the short time available. Knight will participate in two 30 minute practice sessions today followed by qualifying on Saturday which consists of two 20 minute periods.

The two 14 lap Kumho Tyres Australian Formula 3 Championship races counting towards the prestigious CAMS Gold Star will be held on Sunday. For most in the high class field it will be their second visit to Phillip Island this season, the circuit having hosted an earlier round of the series in May.
