July 23, 2001 - Maltese born Australian Formula Three Championship motor racing driver, Damien Digby, has salvaged two top ten finishes at Queensland Raceway despite enduring a weekend of major brake system and suspension problems.

Digby's Dallara F395 was not up to the task during qualifying for this fourth round of the Australian F3 Championship, with a number of mechanical problems relegating the Maltese driver to 10th in the first qualifying session and 12th after the second session. Given these lowly starting positions for each of yesterday's two races, the outlook for his chances of success in Queensland was grim.

Despite the problems, Digby powered his F3 machine to as high as third during the first race, but an incident with a lapped competitor during the closing stages saw him temporarily off the circuit. He recovered from this setback to finish 6th. Digby reported severe braking and handling problems after the race with a leaking shock absorber found by his pit crew. Digby's race two result of 7th was well below what he had expected to gain at this round of the Australian Formula Three Championship.

"This was a very disappointing weekend for me - as a driver there is only so much that I can do to get strong results. If the car isn't right, you cannot race to win. At least I gained some points with two top ten finishes, but we could have secured two podium finishes at Queensland Raceway judging by our past form. I am now 6th in the Championship, so we will have to work harder to complete the season strongly." Digby said.

There is no time for contemplating what could have been in Queensland, as Digby leaves for London today to meet with leading Formula Three teams to discuss his international racing plans. Immediately after this visit he returns to his homeland of Malta for a hectic series of media and promotional appointments from July 30 to August 7.

"I am looking forward to meeting with the major Formula 3 teams in England to discuss my plans to represent Malta at the Macau F3 Grand Prix and I can' t wait to get back home. The support I have been receiving by the Maltese media and sports fans alike has been truly fantastic," Digby said.

Digby's racing efforts have attracted major newspaper, magazine and television coverage in his homeland since the start of the season.
