AUSSIE INTERNATIONAL JOHN MARTIN JOINS PICCOLA SCUDERIA FOR NIKON INDY 300 F3 CHALLENGE

One of Australia's top up-and-coming International drivers will return home to get some street circuit miles in Australian Formula 3's non-championship challenge at next week's Nikon Indy 300 on the Gold Coast.

John Martin, a member of the Australian Motorsport Foundation's (AMSF) International Rising Star program, will line up with experienced operation Piccola Scuderia Corse next week when Australia's top ‘wings and slicks' category returns to the Surfers Paradise streets.

Martin will drive PSC's Dallara F307 Mercedes Benz chassis that was one of the quickest cars at the Clipsal 500 this year in the hands of Neil McFadyen, and driven later in the season to a Phillip Island podium by the teams impressive rookie star Justin Tate.

The 24-year-old Gosford- born driver was the 2006 Australian Formula Ford Champion before jetting to Europe to take up a drive with Alan Docking Racing, and subsequently Raikkonen-Robertson Racing, in the British Formula 3 International series.

At the same time he was selected by the Australian team of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport series and recently finished a career-high fourth in the opening round at Zandvoort, the Netherlands.

The Nikon Indy 300 will be Martin's first race on Australian soil in a Formula 3 car.

"As a series we're very pleased to see the likes of John Martin return to Australian soil to get the benefit of racing at the Nikon Indy 300 with Australian Formula 3," series chairman James Rosenberg said.

"Congratulations go to Piccola for confirming John for Indy and we're looking forward to seeing what one of the best Aussie talents currently racing overseas can do against our own class Formula 3 field including 2008 champion James Winslow, Leanne Tander, Nathan Caratti and a host of other very talented drivers from here and abroad.

"It is an ideal opportunity to gain miles on a street circuit in front of a very big crowd at one of the biggest events in Australian Motorsport. Formula 3 Australia is very excited to be back there and to have John as part of the field."

Martin will be part of a talent-packed field that will include the best and brightest from the Australian championship and several visitors from overseas, including one each from Indonesia, New Zealand, Columbia and the United Kingdom.

It will also be the first time that the current-generation F307 chassis and Mercedes Benz engines will have raced on the demanding 4.47km street circuit, teams and drivers already targeting the existing 1m49.5084s lap record established on F3s last visit to the track by John Pettit, in 2004.

The Nikon Indy 300 F3 Challenge will be a non-championship round with drivers contesting over three races - held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday - to decide the overall winner of the event.

The current Formula 3 Australia points regulations will be in effect for each race, with one bonus point being offered to the pole position winner, and another point for the fastest lap in each race.
