Canadian Spengler 27th at the F3 Master in Holland
Montreal, Canada, August 10, 2003 -- Canadian race car driver Bruno Spengler finished 27th today in the Formula 3 Master held on the road circuit of Zandvoort, Holland. The young driver was forced to leave the track not to hit another competitor who spun right in front of him.
Spengler, 19 and a member of the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Junior Team took the start of this non-championship race in 24th position after having set a quick time during the warm-up session held earlier in the morning. "I set the 8th fastest time during the warm-up and that gave me plenty of confidence for the race," he said.
"I started the race in 24th place and I immediately started to pass other cars. After five laps, I was up in 18th position," said Spengler from Holland. "In a fast corner, the guy who was running in front of me lost control of his car and spun. I thought I had enough room to pass him on the edge of the track but he forgot to brake and his car rolled backward. That closed the gap I was aiming for. I had to swerve not to hit him and left the track."
The off-track excursion cost Spengler 15 places. Fortunately, he made it back to the track. "Despite going through the gravel trap, my car was okay. I passed four cars before the race was over. I finished 27th out of 37 contestants. I made some good progress all week-end long and I am happy to have set the 4th fastest lap in the race. However, I am disappointed with the overall result but there's little you can do with just three, 30-minute sessions and a race. I have to feel more comfortable in the car."
Next weekend, Spengler will contest another round of the Euro F3 Series at the Nurburgring, Germany. "It's good to have two races in succession like that. I will now forget about the Master and focus on the Nurburgring race and try to finish on the podium," Spengler concluded.
