Formula BMW UK Champion, Marcus Ericsson tested a Raikkonen Robertson Racing Formula 3 car at Pembrey last Friday (5 October), as a prize for landing the Formula BMW title.
Ericsson became the first Rookie to win the overall title after dominating the season finale at Knockhill on 2 September. On his 17th birthday he lifted the trophy with an impressive win tally of seven and eleven pole positions. The young Swede is hoping to graduate to British F3 next season and was thrilled with the opportunity to test for one of the top teams.
He said: This test has given me valuable experience in a new car and it's been great to work with the guys at Double R."
After a full day acclimatising to the car, Ericsson was pleased with his performance and also impressed the team, which ran Mike Conway to the title in 2006 and Stephen Jelley to third in the championship this year.
"I thought it would be quite had making the transition from Formula BMW to Formula 3 but its been a lot easier than I expected! I've been able to use quite similar driving styles and I've just been getting quicker as the day goes on."
Raikkonen Robertson team manager Anthony 'Boyo' Hieatt added: It was a pleasure working with Marcus. He made no mistakes and adapted well to the car, posting some competitive lap times. He is a superb young driver who looks destined to go far in his career."
British F3 is top of the wish list as the next step for most Formula BMW graduates and Ericsson is now looking at options to join the series in 2008. The prize F3 test with Raikkonen Robertson Racing underlines BMWs commitment to help drivers make the progression out of Formula BMW to develop their talent before hopefully seeing them again as they reach their final goal of Formula One.
Peter Walker, General Manager, Sports Marketing, BMW (UK): We're delighted to be able to offer a Formula 3 test to our champion. We like to think we are able to help young drivers in their careers and giving them a leg-up into F3 is a significant and important investment as an intermediate step on their way to Formula 1. Marcus is a very talented driver and has helped create an exciting final season of Formula BMW racing in the UK in advance of the new Formula BMW Europe series in 2008. The youngster has proved he has the talent and commitment to go far in motorsport and we would all like to wish him well. We're very proud of him."
