WALKER HEADS TO HOLLAND FOR FORMULA THREE'S WORLD CUP
Jersey's James Walker will this weekend take part in the unofficial World Cup of Formula 3 racing. The Masters of Formula 3 is an annual event which sees the best drivers from all over the world fight it out in a single race for F3's ultimate crown at Zandvoort in the Netherlands. It is the country's biggest sporting occasion and attracts a global TV audience of millions.
"Although the Masters doesn't count for championship points it's important because it carries so much prestige," says James. "If you win, you know that Formula 1 team managers will take notice. The race is run on different tyres from the ones we use in the British International Championship, so we're at a disadvantage in relation to the Euro Series drivers who race on this rubber all through the season.
"However, we entered the recent Euro Series race at Brand Hatch partly to get some time on these tyres, so we have some experience to help us hit the ground running. It will be tough as we're up against the best 45 Formula 3 drivers in the world but I'm aiming high. Last weekend we were on the front row at Spa and I'm overdue another win. We know we have the pace and it's only a matter of time, so it would be great if it all came together in the Masters."
Zandvoort, which used to host the Dutch Grand Prix, is uniquely located in the coastal dunes near Amsterdam, providing the additional variable of a dusty, slippery track surface. The Masters is contested over a single race on Sunday, following two qualifying sessions on Saturday.
