Chicago, IL---Kenneth "Skip" Weld, President of Weldsports, carries with him one of racings most diversified backgrounds. Weld has raced is some of the nation's premier series such as, Formula 2000, Formula Super Vee and most recently the United States Formula Three Championship Powered by Volkswagen. Weld has also spent much time coaching drivers, preparing, engineering cars, and managing a race team. After a good show in the inaugural USF3 Championship, Weld and Weldsports are hoping to have a winning 2001 season.
Weld is very anxious for the 2001 season to start. He finished fifth overall in last season's USF3 Championship. When asked about his thoughts and feeling towards last season, he stated: "I feel we had a good season considering that we were on a tight budget. I am looking forward to 2001, because I feel we have made many improvements from last season."
The veteran driver was very positive about the USF3 operations, "it is very democratically run and reasonable to work with. More so than any other series that I have seen. A big plus to the USF3 is that all the drivers respected each other. We only had one or two full course yellows all year, so we raced full races, unlike many other series."
The Dallara F399 is still being used in Europe with great success. Weld is one of two drivers in the USF3 who had the chance to drive both the Dallara F399 and the F300 model Dallaras. Weld compared the two cars, " both cars performed great all season. I never drove the two cars on the same track on the same day; however, the 2000 car was more stable. The suspension differences on the 99 cars made it crisper in the turns. The Dallara offers a great package, the cars were great to drive and easy to work on. I feel very strongly that either car can win."
For next year Weld is looking to continue to run his team. An added benefit, is Weld's willingness to share with younger drivers his ability to coach and engineer a race car. " The opportunity to drive would be a plus but I am most interested in running a one or two car team, where I can use my knowledge and skills in racing to help a young driver succeed. I love to engineer, manage and teach, I truly hope to find a driver with the potential to work with."
