He is only 19 -year -old but in spite of his youth the Spaniard ,who won the Open Telefonica in 1999 ,has written a gold page in the F-3000 FIA history. His victory in the Belgium GP and his fourth position in the F-3000 divers overall standings shows that he has made a really good golden season.. A new genius is borned.

Barcelona, 29th August 2000- It has been his first season in the F-3000 FIA and as a newcomer, Fernando Alonso has done all his best in this category. He has reached 17 points in the all F-3000 season that finished last Saturday at Spa-Francorchamps circuit, and he has also become the youngest driver who has won a race in the F-3000 championship. The F-3000 is considered to be the immediately previous step to Formula One and the young Asturian driver has beaten all the records. It has to remember that he has the only Spaniard who has compete in this championship. The balance of his season might haven¹t been better, a 6th position in Austria, 2nd in Hungary and his last top result 1st in Spa-Francorchamps. So, it not strange that because of his good progression, up to now, Fernando Alonso is an oficial Formula One test driver in the Minardi Team.

The Open Telefonica, a champions source

In Fernando Alonso¹s list of victories points up to be the last year Open Telefonica winner. In the Open Telefonica, the most important car racing Series in Europe after Formula One and Formula 3000 FIA, Fernando Alonso was able to be in the podium eight times being first six times. The Spaniard compited only one season in the Open Telefonica but he won all.. The same success happened with the Spaniard Marc Gene who was the Open Telefonica ¹98 winner and went from the Open Telefonica Championship to Formula One becoming a driver of the Telefonica Minardi Team. These facts prove that the FIA International Series Open Telefonica has become a new source of high-talented young drivers.

Jaime Alguersuari, The President of RPM Racing, shares with happiness the great success of the young Asturian driver Fernando Alonso. ³His superb results in his debu in the Formula 3000 FIA shows that Fernando is a really good -talented driver and a born winner because he usually wins in all the competitions that he competes. Moreover, his great progression shows that the FIA International Series Open Telefonica is becoming the best and previous step to Formula One and F-3000 FIA. Marc Gene was the first to reach the Formula One and now Fernando Alonso has become the absolute sensation in his first F-3000 season.²

The next one can be the Spaniard twenty-year-old driver Antonio Garcia (Adrian Campos Motorsport) who is the current Series leader in the Open Telefonica with 167 points.
