'Mature' Race Hands Robert Doornbos 5th Place at Magny-Cours!

Nevers, July 03 2004 -- In the fifth round of the FIA International F3000 Championship, Robert Doornbos today brought home a decent fifth position at the circuit of Magny-Cours. With the obtained four points, the 22 year old Dutchman now occupies the third position in the overall standings as well as enlarged his lead in the rookie classification. Winner today was Doornbos' teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi, who now again leads the championship standings.

The start of today's race went all but clean for all contenders. The safety-car was employed in lap 02 when Mattias Lauda's car rolled after a collision with Alan van der Merwe. Doornbos, who started from P4, took immediate advance of the hectic situation as he overtook Patrick Friesacher in the first few meters. During the three laps the race was neutralised, Doornbos therefore could position himself right behind his teammate Vitantonio Liuzzi and Yannick Schroeder for the restart.

Once the safety-car was deployed in lap 05, the Viareggio (IT) based driver, had to let pass former F3000 champ Tomas Enge and Patrick Friesacher because of their experience in rolling starts. In lap 19, Doornbos made his pitstop while lying in fifth position and continued his way without loosing any positions. As both the drivers behind and in front of him were too far away, the 22-year old rookie only had to race himself for the remainder of the 35 laps race. After 50 minutes of racing, Doornbos finally crossed the finishline in fifth position.

Doornbos: "For the first time this year I copied the race set-up of my teammate, which was much more friendly to the (wear of the) tyres. During the restart however I saw Tomas Enge approaching me 'full locked'. I decided to focus myself on the championship and not to take unnecessary risks, and there fore let him pass. I'm currently third in the overall driver standings as well as best rookie. For the upcoming Grand Prix I'm determined to close the gap in qualifying to my teammate Vitantonio. If I can succeed in that, I'll be in a better shape to fight for regular podiumfinishes and maybe even racewins!"
