Through problems during the start phase, Coceiro and Da Matta stalled their engines, a new formation lap was neccessary.
At the second try everything went well, although some cars went very sideways in the entrance to the first curve. Zonta and Brack side by side, Zonta with better nerves wins this duell for the lead, and with a surprise attack Muller takes second position from Brack. Kristensen queues up to a comfortable fourth place, while Goossens has to fight for fifth with his back to the wall against Gueiros and Gollin, and his gearbox problems. In fifth lap Gueiros, and ten laps later the the Italian duo Fabrizio Gollin and Thomas Biagi, get past the Belgian. Shortly before the finish Gollin spins into the gravel. Austrian Oliver Tichy keeps seventh place after hard duels against Pescatori, who spun off, and Laurent Redon. Jorg Muller followed Ricardo Zonta with a tight distance almost the entire race, but had no chance for a riskless attack; kept his safe second place and has an advantage of three points now ahead of Kenny Brack before the final round at Hockenheim in two weeks.
