Chennai’s Madras Motor Race Track was the venue of choice for back-to-back rounds of the regional F4 season, and as was the case in the previous weekend France’s Alessandro Ghiretti again started the proceedings on top.
Ghiretti put his car on pole position by breaking the 1m37s barrier and after staving off an early challenge from Muizz Musyaffa, the Frenchman cruised to a comfortable three-second win in Race 1.
It was later found that Musyaffa had made a jump start, promoting Kane Shepherd to second and Luke Thompson to the final podium spot.
In Race 2, Alister Yoong, son of former Malaysian F1 racer Alex, made a blistering start from third place, jumping into the lead by the second corner.
However, towards the end of the race he was pressured by Ghiretti, who had carefully scythed his way through the field, including a double overtake over Antoine Potty and Shepherd.
Ghiretti attempted to pass Yoong down the start/finish straight on the final lap, but just didn’t have enough grunt to make a move and and had to settle for second. Potty completed the podium spots.
Musyaffa made up for a jump start in Race 1 with a fine performance in the final event of the weekend, taking a lights-to-flag win by a margin of six seconds.
While the Malaysian cruised out at front, a tight battle ensued between Ghiretti and Shepherd. Ultimately, Ghiretti was able to find a way past the Thai racer and end the weekend as the top points scorer.
Meanwhile, Chetan Korada, who races with prosthetic legs in the JK Tyre and MRF F1600 championships, took part in the second Indian F4 SEA round on a one-off basis.
His best results were a pair of seventh-place finishes.
All-Indian podium in Caterham races
Two races of the Caterham 7 Asia Zonal Championship were also held last weekend at the Madras Motor Race track.
Coimbatore veteran B Vijayakumar took a double win, with MR Dastur and former FMSCI President Vicky Chandhok finishing second and third respectively in both races.
