Malaysia F4 SEA: Chatterjee scores quartet of podiums

Nayan Chatterjee made a successful debut in Formula 4 South East Asia, scoring four podiums in the opening round of the season in Malaysia.

Chatterjee was due to start Race 1 from the front row of the grid until it was cancelled on safety grounds. A drain cover had become loose during F1 practice and caused a major accident.

As a result, the weekend’s second race effectively became Race 1. The race was largely unspectacular for Chatterjee, who slipped from second to finish a disappointing sixth. However, things only improved for the Mumbai-based driver from there.

In Race 2, Chatterjee made his way through the pack after starting fifth and immediately put himself in contention. He briefly passed second-placed Danial Frost, before settling down in third place and notching his first series podium.

Race 3 took place right after the preceding race, with cars filled for both the eight-lappers. However, an error in judging the adequate amount of fuel by the organisers led to a bizarre situation where all cars - including Chatterjee’s - ran out of fuel. Results were declared at the end of lap 5, when Chatterjee was running in third position.

The final two races of the weekend took place on Sunday morning, ahead of the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Chatterjee started Race 4 from pole position - based on second fastest qualifying times - and held the lead at the start, before he was passed by Daniel Cao. However, he held onto the back of the Chinese driver and finished the race just 1.050s behind him.

Later in the day, Chatterjee rounded off the weekend with a third place result in Race 5, finishing right behind winner Nazim Azman and second-placed Kane Shepherd.
