Team Apex Westward-Bound for Formula BMW Americas at Miller
Brownsburg, IN (13 May 09)--Just three weeks after rounds 3 and 4 at Virginia International Raceway, Team Apex Racing USA will be back in action again this weekend for rounds 5 and 6 of the 2009 Formula BMW Americas Championship at Miller Motorsports Park outside of Salt Lake City.
The Indianapolis-based team will once again bring a three-deep roster of young international talent as Australia's James Kovacic, Colombia's Martin Sala, and Brazil's Joao Victor Horto look to make more strides in their rookie season of Formula BMW Americas competition.
While the visit to the impressive Miller Motorsports Park facility is the first for all three young drivers, the schedule will give the trio plenty of track time as the event opens with two days of testing at the track before moving into the double-race weekend as part of the American Le Mans Series event. The extended schedule will also pay dividends as the racers also cope with their own significant time-zone shifts after making the long journey to the Utah track from their home towns.
The testing will not only give them a good feel for the circuit, but will also be another opportunity to continue to learn how to get the most out of the Michelin-equipped Formula BMW machinery for the rookies, with coaching and consultation from Team Apex's engineers and coaching staff.
The Miller race week is also a good chance for the team to grow the momentum from a strong VIR race outing. All three drivers showed marked improvement and pace, capped by Kovacic scoring a front-row starting spot in qualifying. But despite the progress made through the weekend, the results were not what had been hoped for so the team will aim for a stronger points harvest out west.
"Every time that we hit the track for a race weekend, all three of our guys have a lot to adjust to from the moment that we hit the first session," said Team Apex Director of Commercial Development David Hunt. "And this weekend, it's not just jet lag but also the altitude that we are going to be racing at for the guys to get acclimated to. So for us to have the week to get everyone on the same page and have the guys get the chance to go home and think about the track every night, that's just going to put us in a better position once the race weekend actually starts. Being here all week long, It's kind of like a miniature version of the month of May!"
