BAMBER RETURNS TO ASIA FOR MORE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
Wanganui 5th former Earl Bamber returns to Malaysia this week looking to build on his successful start to the Formula BMW Asia Championship. The Powerbuilt Tools supported driver took third place in the feature race at the opening rounds of the series at Sepang in March.
Bamber will again race on the Sepang circuit this weekend but on a totally different track configuration. On his previous visit when the series was a support category to the Formula 1 World Championship Malaysian Grand Prix, he raced on the 5.6 kilometre track. "This weekend's rounds take place on the northern circuit", say's the teenage star. "It's a shorter circuit, around 3.7 kilometres, but it's really good", he said today as he prepared to travel to Malaysia. "I'm looking forward to the weekend, it's been a wee while since I was over there". Testing of his Team Meritus prepared, 140 horsepower FB02 Formula BMW car since that opening round has gone well and Bamber is upbeat when he say's, "the last test went really well - we had more car pace".
After the opening rounds of the series Bamber claimed that it was very close between the top six and he believes the times will again be extremely close this weekend. "It will be like Formula Ford", he say's referring to a category famous for close, wheel to wheel racing.
Bamber, will participate in two days of testing on Thursday and Friday at Sepang before qualifying and the first race of the weekend take place on Saturday. The following day he will take part in two races. All of the races will be over a minimum distance of 60 kilometres, longer than any of the races he competed in during the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship over the New Zealand summer.
Bamber finished that series on a high recently, winning the last two races in the series at Pukekohe in his Powerbuilt Stealth. Despite missing a round of that championship while he raced in Malaysia he still finished 4th in the series in his debut season. Bamber has achieved so much in a short time that it is easy to forget he is still only 15 - years - old and in his debut motor racing season.
