James Grunwell heads to Beijing Series

British racing driver James Grunwell, representing Thailand, heads to China's capital next week to compete in the Formula BMW Asia championship. Rounds 6, 7 and 8 are held at Goldenport Circuit, Beijing where FBMWA will demonstrate why it has so quickly become recognised as the region's premier entry level single seater series -- and to seek its third Chinese champion.

Two of the three drivers crowed Formula BMW Asia Champion so far have been Chinese: Dutch-Chinese Ho Pin Tung who took the inaugural title in 2003, and was subsequently rewarded with a Formula One test by BMW Motorsport; and Hong Kong's Marchy Lee Ying-Kin, champion the following year.

Other Chinese drivers who have made their mark over the course of the last three seasons include Shanghai-born literary and now motorsport-celebrity Han Han, Wang Jian Wei, both of whom won BMW Motorsport Scholarships, Song Ge, Chia On, Hanss Lin Po Heng, Jonathan Chan, Jim Ka To and Michael Ting.

After five races of the season completed, Grunwell (Pizza Company Team Meritus) is placed 2nd in the Rookie Cup and 3rd in the overall championships standings. Leaading the championship is Earl Bamber (Team Meritus), followed by Australian Sam Abay (Team E-Rain) . Bamber and Grunwell take the top two positions in the battle for the Rookie Cup, followed by top BMW Junior Daniel Ricciardo (AUS/Eurasia Motorsport).

Grunwell says: "I had a few braking problems at the last race in Sepang, but having taken the lead off Earl Bamber in the 3rd race there I felt pretty good, The Meritus team will have sorted the car out, I have been in training for the last few weeks and am mentally and physically ready to race. Hopefully I will come back to Thailand with an extra 15kg of trophies in my suitcase, including at least one or two 1st place ones. It will be great for my sponsors Pizza Company, Belco, Bartercard, Metro Magazine, CBRE Richard Ellis, Champion to see more good results."

The series returns to China later this season as an Official support race to the 2006 Formula 1TM Sinopec Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai, while the Grand Finale of the season will be held at Southern China's Zhuhai International Circuit in October.
