BMW World Final comes to Bahrain

Manama, 14 December 2005: December 14 welcomes the start of the inaugural Formula BMW World Final at the Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) as 36 drivers from 15 different countries go head to head in the hunt for a $60,000 purse and a test in the new BMW Sauber F1 team.

Over the four days, talented young drivers from five continents will be vying for the accolade of being declared the fastest Formula BMW driver in the world. The champion will be the third Formula BMW young gun to have the opportunity to test a Formula One car: In 2002 Nico Rosberg had the honour and in 2003 Ho-Pin Tung created an impact when testing for the BMW WilliamsF1 Team. Rosberg went on to win the GP2 Drivers' Championship title in 2005, picking up the title at the BIC, and is now looking forward to a race seat in the Williams team in 2006.

To be in contention for the honour of driving an F1 car and claiming the cash prize, the young drivers have to get through qualifying and intermediate heats in order to compete in the final race that takes place on Friday, 16th December. In the intervals between the Formula BMW races, spectators can look forward to a fascinating drift championship and other on track entertainment.

Shaikh Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa, one of Bahrain's favourite sons and the Formula BMW Asia Champion, is very much looking forward to competing against some of the best young drivers in the world at the home of motorsport in the Middle East, The Bahrain International circuit. Sh. Salman commented; "I am absolutely delighted to be competing at the BIC once again and also against Formula BMW champions from around the world." He added, "Racing at the BIC in front of my home crowd will give me an added chance, but I'm under no illusions - it's going to be a tough couple of days."

The General Manager of the BIC, Martin Whitaker, commented "Having two Bahraini drivers, Shaikh Salman bin Rashid Al Khalifa and Hamed Al Farden, competing in such a high profile race event is a fantastic advert for the Kingdom of Bahrain. We have been incredibly busy over the past four months and are extremely glad to be ending the year on such a high note with this championship."
