Debut FBMW podium for Tambay, in front of 140,000+ fans at the Norisring circuit
Adrien Tambay claimed his first FBMW Germany podium result this weekend, battling his way to 3rd position in the second race of the weekend, at the Norisring circuit, near Nurnberg. He also finished best of the rookie drivers for the first time in 2007, adding to his silverware collection.
On the back of a pair of successful FBMW races at the US F1 Grand Prix just a week ago, Tambay made his first visit to the famous street circuit in Southern Germany. In spite of an initial feeling that the track was both "amazing and strange", he was quickly able to acclimatise himself to the unique features of the track, which played host to over 140,000 fans over the course of the race weekend.
Qualifying brought mixed weather conditions, and delivered two top ten places. In race one, on Saturday, a strong start from 8th place saw Tambay exit the first corner in 6th position, where he remained for the first third of the 19 lap race. Lap 8 saw him gain another position, taking 5th, which he retained through to the chequered flag, claiming a further 32 points in the race for the overall series lead.
Sunday morning brought dry and sunny conditions, and with it the opportunity to race closer to the front of the pack, starting from 6th position on the grid. Another confident start saw Tambay gain yet another place by the time the pack exited the first corner, from where he focused on settling into a steady rhythm. This mature approach delivered success, as by the time the chequered flag waved to end the race, the sixteen-year-old Tambay had safely raced his way into 3rd place, and the final podium position.
Afterwards, Tambay commented, "That was great. My thanks to my mechanics, my team boss Josef Kaufmann, to BMW, my various sponsors, and my father; this is exactly what we've all been working towards." Reflecting on his brief career to date this was just his fourth ever race-car event - he added, "I've had a strong, consistent start to the season, but I know that I'm capable of scoring regular podiums, so I was becoming a little impatient. To have the chance to fight hard, and clean, to take this first podium place, is perfect. It's been worth the wait, and will hopefully be the first of many. To make the podium in front of such a big crowd, that's just the icing on the cake."
An understandably emotional father, Patrick, who also reached the podium in his first season, commented, "It's natural that people will try to compare us, but things are different now; this is really serious competition. Adrien is doing great, much better than I was at his age. The experience he has gained as part of this Formula BMW programme is invaluable, and we can now see that Adrien really benefited from his trip to Indianapolis last week."
