The 2002 Formula BMW ADAC Championship

An impressive line-up is expected for the Formula BMW ADAC Championship, which makes its debut on 20th/21st April in Hockenheim, Germany. A total of 32 entries have already been received for the new ADAC and BMW series for young drivers. What is more, the Championship has attracted a great deal of interest internationally, with young talents from six different nations having registered.

Altogether, there are ten race weekends in the 2002 Formula BMW ADAC Championship, each with two races. Eight of these will take place as part of the DTM (German Touring Car Masters), two of these being held in other countries. The two other dates are absolute highlights. First, the young drivers will be performing on 22nd and 23rd June parallel to the Formula 1 at the European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, Germany. Later, they will again have the chance to demonstrate their talent in front of a large crowd at the "German 500" Champ Car race at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz on 20th/21st September.

ADAC Sports President Hermann Tomczyk says: "We are of course pleased that our young drivers` series will have the chance to appear at these two major Formula events in Germany. It is bound to be an exciting experience for everybody." BMW Director of Motor Sport Gerhard Berger: "Our new car, the Formula BMW, is a technical milestone in our many years of young drivers' promotion and therefore also a significant upgrading of the series." Hans-Jörg Fischer, CEO of the EuroSpeedway Lausitz: "The Formula BMW ADAC Championship, the German Formula 3 Championship and the ASCAR Stock Cars events provide our audience with three attractive racing series as part of the Champ Car support programme. They make up a fantastic schedule of top events".

Pilots from six countries will compete for 200,000 ¬ in prize money. One of them is Nico Rosberg, son of the former Formula 1 world champion Keke. The 15 year-old Finn has already caused a stir in the field of carting and is regarded as a great talent. Another prominent son from the motor racing scene, Thomas Holzer, 16 years old, will also be seeking to make his mark - his father is manager of the DTM Opel Holzer team.

The 2002 Formula BMW ADAC Championship will take place using a completely new standard car. The Formula BMW will replace the ADAC Formula and the Junior Formula, which have successfully written motor racing history over the past eleven years. The 150 hp Monoposto, which can reach 220 km/h (140 mph), sets new standards in terms of appearance, technical specifications and especially safety features. The subsidised price for the car is 45,000 ¬ on the road.

Ten selected pilots will compete as "BMW ADAC Juniors" and will be given special funding amounting to 50,000 ¬ each. It is intended that they should continue the successful tradition of junior drivers. The most famous pilot to have received this funding from ADAC and BMW so far was today's Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher.
