MOTAWORLD SIGNS WEBBER'S WONDER
Motaworld Racing has snapped up Thomas Hillsdon for its upcoming Formula BMW Europe campaign. His mentor is Red Bull F1 star, Mark Webber.
The Chatham-based squad was impressed by the potential of the former kartist when he tested for the team at Barcelona, Hockenheim and Hungaroring before Christmas.
Team owner Alan Waite said "Thomas is developing very well and has the potential to be a very competitive rookie in the championship. I'm delighted to have someone with so much promise."
Hillsdon, 16, has English/Australian dual nationality and has homes in London and Monaco. He was attracted to karting at the age of eight after a fun day out with near-neighbour and former F1 driver, Guy Edwards and his son.
Since then Hillsdon has earned a factory drive with Sodi Kart and in the French and European championships he achieved three podiums, three lap records and one pole position. He has not yet raced a car.
He said "I enjoyed testing the Formula BMW with Motaworld; they're all very easy to get on with and that helps a lot. But I am really looking forward to the actual racing. That should be even better."
The Hillsdon family has been involved in motorsport for some time. Thomas's father, Vincent is a business investor and manager and one of his companies used to sponsor Webber when he raced in F3000.
Motaworld Racing has supported Formula BMW since its inception in the UK and it is one of the few British teams to be granted entries for Formula BMW Europe. The squad still has one seat available. Contact Alan Waite on 07929 167309.
The first round of Formula BMW Europe will support the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona on April 27.
