Formula BMW Americas rookie David Ostella leaves for Montreal and the Canadian Grand Prix today, and a weekend that is sure to be the most exciting in his young racing career. It's the first in a pair of series starts run in support of almighty Formula One, and the 16-year-old was already riding high on Tuesday.
"I can't wait to get to Montreal and get on the track," he said in preparing for the event that will see him sharing the asphalt with the reigning kings of motorsport. "I have been getting some pointers from Eurointernational coach Daniel Morad on how to take some of the corners and on what the track was like for him in winning last year. I have been going non-stop in the simulator practising Montreal as well, and have been improving with each session. It's not the real thing, but it's not bad at all!"
While it may be David's first trip to the famed circuit, Renato Ostella has been a regular at the event for years and was brimming with the pride of a father as he prepared to depart. "It's just amazing. The feeling is incredible," he said Tuesday night. "I am so proud of David to be racing on the same track as the F1 boys. I tell everyone about him racing this weekend and people go crazy. They can't believe it and then they tell all their friends. I've been getting calls like crazy - but the real weight of the situation will hit when I see him drive down pit lane the first time. I can't wait to see it!"
Ostella and family depart for the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve at noon today and will have an intense schedule throughout the weekend. Thursday night is the BMW of Canada Grand Prix Media Dinner and Friday morning will see the cars on track at 8:45am. Drivers then attend a FBMW Education and Coaching debrief before heading trackside for Formula One practice. Noon brings qualifying for both rounds three and four, before a race on each of the following days. The first of the weekend follows Formula One qualifying on Saturday and the second follows the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday.
The Montreal round of the 2008 Formula BMW Americas schedule is the second event of the season and will produce races three and four of fourteen. David will once again be racing with support from Global Precast Motorsports, Alpinestars and RAW Integrated Inc.
