Maxime Pelletier, 3rd and 5th at Mid-Ohio
Montreal, Quebec, June 24th, 2008. -- Chances are Maxime Pelletier could have stepped on his last Formula BMW America podium in round 5 of the double header held at Mid-Ohio this weekend. After realizing 3rd place in the morning, he took to the track in the afternoon on damp tarmac where he finished 5th. Disappointed with the lack of performance of his single seater and considering his chances of winning the championship are quickly fading, he admits the remainder of his season is under evaluation. The 17-year old Montreal driver, sponsored by BioCig, the new electronic and environmental cigarette, admits the triple header coming up at Lime Rock could be the turning point in his season.
"It was obvious I was coming back for a third season with the championship in mind, admits Pelletier. After the weekend, my team assured me I would get a faster car in the coming rounds. I don't have the impression I'm fighting with equal weapons. If that was the case, I wouldn't complain. Next is driver behavior on the track: I've been here for three years and we don't know what to expect anymore. This is why I'm considering if the Lime Rock rounds will not be my last hurrah according to where I stand in points. I will reassess my future whatever happens."
"Looking back at those two Mid-Ohio rounds, the first was a walk in the park, because we started and finished in the same order. There was no way I could move up one place because of a lack in speed. In the second race, the track was pretty damp with just the race line drying. One guy was blocking and I could not overtake. Mikael (Grenier) took some chances, clinched fourth and I took fifth. I think my mind was not into racing at this point."
What lies ahead
Maxime and the people around him will take some time to evaluate the situation and decide about the rest of his season. "I'm still puzzled about the Bimmer series, he says. I think I want to play all my cards and have no regrets afterwards. I still have a lot of racing left in me but the conditions have to change. We've been considering the situation for the last two days."
