Autotecnica will continue its racing activities in Formula BMW and new racing series around the World.
Despite today's unfortunate news from BMW Motorsport about the cancellation of the Formula BMW Americas Championship, Team Autotecnica will adjust its operations to cater to Formula BMW racing clients in the European and Pacific Championships. In addition, Autotecnica will expand its operations into other racing categories in North America, thus maintaining its position as a top-level professional racing team.
"It would be a shame to put such a swift end to six years worth of experience, knowledge and development that we've gained in Formula BMW since 2004. We have a lot to give back to our racing clients who hire us for our expertise in professional driver training and for our excellent reputation as a racing service provider," says Team Manager, Enrico Diano, "We have always been front runners in North America and have won several championships to prove it. Now we will go and be front runners in Europe and Asia as well."
Autotecnica will begin by contesting the final three rounds of the Formula BMW Pacific championship to be held in Singapore with Formula One, Okayama (Japan) with the World Touring Car Championship, and in Macau for the 56th Macau Grand Prix, over the months of September through to November 2009. Interested drivers should contact the team very soon for a seat in one of their two cars that will be shipped over.
The team has also been in contact with various North American racing series organizers in the interest of expanding into other categories, be they open wheel or closed wheel. Diano continues to comment, "Competing in other categories has always been of great interest to us and now we have the perfect opportunity to make the move. Some categories offer television coverage which would be a great medium for exposure for our partners and an excellent complement to our existing marketing and promotional operations. I can't wait to get the ball rolling on some of these options we have -- 2010 will be an exciting year for Autotecnica."
Team Autotecnica will contiue with its existing Junior Team Program which was developed for young drivers looking to get an early start to racing in open-wheeled cars. Diano says, "The Formula BMW car is an excellent training tool for drivers no matter what they intend to race in the future. The car is the core of our Junior Team program and we will continue with it despite the cancellation of the Formula BMW Americas series as it still provides great value and experience for young drivers looking to transition from karts into cars. We had our first tests earlier in the week and the drivers really got a great taste of what is required to drive these cars properly and competitively. The Formula BMW car is extremely safe and uses current race car technology that makes it an excellent platform for developing a new driver, as we have proven with our Alumni and all of their successes."
The 2009 Formula BMW Americas season continues with the last two events coming up in August at Road America in Wisconsin and Mosport International Raceway in Ontario, Canada -- Autotecnica's home track. "We are still challenging for both the overall championship with Gianmarco Raimondo and the Rookie Championship with Alex Ellis. We won't let up that fight and we hope to get both wins to close off the 2009 season in an amazing way on our home soil at the end of August," emphasizes the Team Manager.
Team Autotecnica would also like to congratulate its Alumnus, Esteban Gutierrez from Mexico, who has just been awarded a Formula One test drive in BMW's F1 car in December of 2009.
