Brands Hatch was the final round of the 2005 Formula BMW UK Championship and on behalf of Kwikpower and the Keystone Group, I was keen to put in a good performance on the famous GP circuit.

I struggled with the handling of the car throughout qualifying and was disappointed with two poor grid positions, until my engineer, Simon Ascoli, discovered why. A broken bolt in the front suspension was the cause of my problems and I was lucky that the wheel stayed attached. Having the front wheel fall off while cornering at 170KPH would not have been too pleasant! With the suspension fixed, I felt the improvement immediately on raceday and began to gain ground.

Jon meets James after the race I made a great start and by the time we arrived at Paddock, had already passed two drivers and was on the inside line into the corner. This proved to be a good choice and enabled me to pass another two cars before I moved to the outside for Druids. Altogether I gained six places on lap one and another four places during the remainder of the race to finish in the top ten. My setup didn't work quite so well with the falling track temperature later in the day but even in race two, I managed to gain three places through the race. This certainly raised a smile from my latest sponsor, Jonathon Blake of the Keystone Group who was watching from the BMW hospitality suite:-

"It was great to see James coming through the field at Brands and, being a racer myself, I may even have picked up a few tips for my next MX-5 race at Snetterton."

Keep an eye out for the Keystone cars at Snetterton on the 23rd October.
