Home Debut for Svendsen-Cook.
As the Formula BMW UK Championship 2007 heads to Norfolk this weekend for Rounds 13 and 14, one driver in particular will be hoping to start a new chapter of Snetterton memories.
Local racer Rupert Svendsen-Cook has lived in Ipswich all his life and experienced his first taste of action at Snetterton when his dad brought him along to the historic airfield track aged eight. From that moment on, motorsport became his dream, which later became a reality when he stepped into a racing car for the first time earlier this year to compete in the Formula BMW UK Championship. This weekend sees him visit his home track for the first time as a driver, not a spectator.
Following eight seasons of competitive karting, this year has been a rollercoaster of a ride for the 16-year-old. His chance to compete in the single-seater series arose just one week ahead of the season start when he undertook his first official test and it has been a steep learning curve ever since.
Despite having no prior car-racing experience, Svendsen-Cook has already made significant progress and is growing in confidence each time he takes to the track. A talented sportsman who has also represented Suffolk in under-15s rugby, he is clearly relishing every moment of his Rookie season and hopes to compete in Formula BMW Europe in 2008.
Rarely seen without a smile on his face, he will be looking for his home crowd to spur him on to a top-ten finish this weekend.
At the top of the table the battle still remains as close as ever. The last outing saw two new winners in Jonathan Legris (Motaworld Racing) and Henry Surtees (Carlin Motorsport) at a rain-soaked Doinington Park where the Championship leaders struggled to pull away from each other in the points standings. Marcus Ericsson (Fortec Motorsport) still leads the table just five points clear of Henry Arundel (Fortec Motorsport) whilst Josef Kral (Double R Racing) is still only nine points shy of the leader.
Snetterton's 1.9-mile layout features two of the longest, fastest straights in the UK, resulting in some wheel-to-wheel action at flat-out speeds - the Formula BMW drivers will touch 127mph on Revett Straight before hitting the brakes at the Esses, one of several prime spots to see overtaking lunges.
With only six races of the Formula BMW UK Championship remaining, all eyes will be on the chasing pack who will be keen to stop Swedish Rookie Ericsson's charge this weekend.
