Race Johnson podiums at the Grand Prix of Denver.
After having numerous mechanical failures at the start of the year in the Formula BMW USA series, Race Johnson showed the city of Denver a great race when he came from 18th position on the grid to score a 3rd place podium finish on the streets of Denver.
Race was up to the challenge when the drivers were given only one hour of practice on Friday before the qualifying session. Qualifying for race #1 was on Friday, a beautiful day in Denver. Race never did get a clean lap in, but still qualifying 5th overall. Starting 5th Race thought he could definitely be in contention for the lead. Race #1 saw three separate incidents causing the safety car to be brought out at one point for 5 laps. Race's car took a few laps to come back in after the slow pace of the safety car, causing a battle to just maintain his position. After falling back to 9th the car finally came in where Race could work with it. Passing Daniel Herrington for 8th spot then giving Richard Philippe all he could handle for the last 2 laps of the race. Race had to settle with a disappointing 8th however Race new he had a car that could be a contender.
Qualifying for race #2 saw rain in downtown Denver. The track was wet; with puddles and streaming water across the track. After 3 hot laps Race found the track to be a little more slippery then he thought. "Locking up and going straight at any other track can be no big deal, but when you're in the streets of Denver things get really narrow", Race said. "I was trying to make this third lap my best lap getting 5th gear at the end of the start finish straight away; however with the extra speed from 5th gear, I flew by my braking zone. Trying to release the lockup, I hydroplaned on the water and went straight into the tires, ending my qualifying session." Sitting out and watching the times drop was the hardest thing for Race to watch. Qualifying a very disappointing 18th, Race new what he had to do for the main event. Starting way back in the 18th grid position it looked almost impossible to make up so many spots. Race very calmly made up position after position, finding him in 9th place. A four car pile up helped Race move up to the 5th position. Picking off Michael Patrizi of Australia in the closing laps left him 4th. With only 1 lap to go Race drove around the outside of what was the point's leader, Kevin Lacroix. A well deserved podium finish for Race. Thanks to HBR Motor sports for the preparation of the car and to McCormick's Fish House in Denver for being a great partner over the weekend.
