Formula BMW USA Development Team Tests at Florida Tracks
The Formula BMW USA Development Team has now logged three days and over 250 miles on the first rolling FB2 to be delivered to the United States. These exploratory sessions were conducted by the Series Coordinator and Engineer, Louis D'Agostino and development driver, Oswaldo Negri. Having been introduced to the FB2 in Spain, Louis commented, "The purpose of these sessions was to allow us a chance to become familiar with the FB2 and to experiment with set up, in order to gain a better understanding of how the car reacts to the permitted modifications."
The car had its initial shake down at Sebring on the modified course where the car was very sound and quick in the first run. With progressive modifications to the springs, roll bars and damper setting changes, Oswaldo gained four seconds from the opening run to the end of the day. Without a baseline time, the Formula BMW could be compared with other introductory series such as Barber Dodge and Formula Renault, running times comparable to both formulas.
This day was followed by two more at Moroso Motorsports Park in West Palm Beach, Florida. Louis was impressed by the adaptability of the FB2 to run on the rough surface at Sebring to the smooth polish of Moroso. "It is very easy to make the allowed modifications to this car and it is impressive to see a minor adjustment have a significant response on the track." The FB2 proved to be very reliable posing no mechanical problems in the three days of testing. Oswaldo stated, "This car is fantastic, it could not be a better package for a junior formula. It is agile, like a go kart you can float a lot of speed through the corner, brake deep and drive hard." The sensation and feeling of the power to grip ratio reminded him of driving an F3 car.
Having won the Brazilian and South American Formula 3 Championship and raced in the Britain and the International Formula 3 Series, he is quite qualified to make this comparison. With 4 Brazilian Karting Championships, the 1998 Indy Lights Pan-American Champion, Oswaldo Negri brings experience, wisdom, natural speed and talent to the development team. This year he will be driving a Daytona Prototype in Grand-Am as well as working with the Development Team and coaching program for Formula BMW USA.
