SAELENS PULLS OUT PORSCHE WIN; DAVISON REIGNS IN FORMULA BMW

INDIANAPOLIS, Saturday, June 18, 2005 -- Belgian driver David Saelens enjoyed double success in Porsche Michelin Supercup action June 18 at the United States Grand Prix.

Starting from the pole in the first of the weekend's two 16-lap races, Saelens scored his first career win in the Porsche Michelin Supercup.

Earlier in the day, Saelens repeated his Friday qualifying success by securing the pole for Sunday's second race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. These were the second and third pole positions of Saelens' Porsche Michelin Supercup career. He also took the pole for the opening points-scoring round of the 2005 series at Imola, Italy.

Saelens led Saturday's entire 16-lap race to win by just over three-tenths of a second over three-time Indianapolis 500 starter Alessandro Zampedri at an average speed of 90.9 mph. This was the second Porsche Michelin Supercup career podium at Indianapolis for Zampedri, who finished second in race one in 2003.

Third was series leader Patrick Huisman, making his fourth visit to the Indianapolis podium, who moves to 86 points but sees his lead cut to just three points over Zampedri. Saelens climbed to third at 71.

German driver Uwe Alzen finished fourth on the track but was handed a drive-through penalty for passing under a yellow flag. The adjusted time dropped Alzen to 14th. The second Porsche Michelin Supercup race is at 11:25 a.m. (EDT) Sunday.

In Saturday's first 13-lap Formula BMW USA race, Australian teen-ager James Davison also scored his maiden series win by 3.534 seconds over French-born Florida resident Richard Philippe at a race average speed of 81.3 miles per hour.

Third was Canadian Robert Wickens, who drives for the Terre Haute, Ind.-based Team Apex Racing USA. Wickens, 16, from Ontario, was a race-winner at last weekend's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal

Davison, 16, took the lead on Lap 6 and held it to the end of the race. Earlier the Safety Car was deployed for two laps following a first-lap accident that eliminated Ryan Campbell and Reed Stevens.

Jonathan Summerton, winner of the first Formula BMW USA race at Indianapolis last year, led on the restart but was passed by Davison on Lap 6 and then was hit from behind by series leader Kevin Lacroix at the start of Lap 9 and dropped back to place sixth. Lacroix failed to finish.

The second Formula BMW USA race is scheduled to begin at 10.30 a.m. (EDT) Sunday.
