Making A Good Point.
Rookie Philip Major scores his first championship point in Formula BMWUSA round 4.
26 very talented drivers, a mere three races under your belt, and still being the tender age of 17. Under those circumstances to finish a race in tenth place is nothing short of remarkable. That Philip Major accomplished this feat in round four of the Formula BMWUSA championship only cements his position as one of Canada's hottest young talents.
The sight of 26 young chargers hurtling towards the first corner as one makes for a nail-biting spectacle, and often mayhem can ensue. But Major kept his head in the midst of the melee and came out the other end in one piece.
"I got a really good start but the guy in front of me swerved across really hard and nearly took off my front wing," said Major of the opening lap, "so I got boxed in and had nowhere to go."
Relying on skill he set about regaining some of the lost ground. "I pushed as hard as I could," said Philip about the first quarter of the race, during which he engaged in a furious battle with several drivers, "in the first few laps we were swapping around a lot."
It was great stuff but concentrating on his immediate on-track battles allowed the leaders to ease out a couple of second gap, which the Ottawa driver acknowledged afterwards. "It was tough when the others broke away. They slowly started pulling away and I thought "I can catch them," but then I looked in my mirrors and I saw this other guy and I knew I had to keep fighting." Major valiantly held onto tenth spot - a position that would give him his first ever FBMWUSA point - under relentless pressure for many laps, but his rival finally made a move two laps from home. "He had more speed coming out of turn seven, so he could take a run into turn one." Explained Major.
Although Major was now forced to settle for 11th place when a lap later the yellows flew - meaning the race would again finish under caution and thus prevent Philip from fighting to retake the place, post-race scrutineering disqualified one competitor, officially classifying Philip 10th. "To get my first point in only my fourth race is awesome." Said a delighted Major that evening, "It shows improvement, we moved forward and it is constant progression. I thank my team and I can't wait to race at home in Canada next time out."
