Summerton takes his fourth pole of the season
Elkhart Lake, Wis. - Aug. 7, 2004 -- Jonathan Summerton (HBR Motorsport) won the pole for Round 10 of the 2004 Formula BMW USA Championship with a time of 2:17.001 minutes around the 4.048-mile Road America circuit. In scoring his fourth pole of the year Summerton saved his fastest laps for the end of the session. A red flag with a minute left secured the pole for Summerton as no one could improve their time. The 25-minute session had quite a few leaders as Summerton, Andreas Wirth, James Hinchcliffe, Billy Johnson all held P1 for a time. The entire field was seconds faster than yesterday as the young drivers gained confidence around Road America's 14 turns. Rookie points leader James Hinchcliffe will start second (2:17.367) and Championship points leader Andreas Wirth will start third (2:17.446).
The quickest Rookies in the field were Summerton, Hinchcliffe and Tom Milner.
"Our set-up was very good today," said Summerton. "And I changed my driving style up a bit. Yesterday I pushed harder and today I drove the car with more feeling than force. I have to come from seventh in today's Round 9 race so I will have to be careful as I know I have the car to win."
Hinchcliffe added, "The AIM Autosport team did a great job getting the car ready for today's conditions. There was a lot more rubber down on the track today and the sun was out just before the session so the track temperature was hotter than yesterday. I had quite a few good laps and feel good about tomorrow's race."
Wirth said, "My car was very good today and I thought I could have been on the pole. I got behind some traffic and had to slow up on my fastest lap, but it is very difficult to slow up enough so as not to lose too much momentum and not lose too much of the draft."
The Round 10 race is scheduled to start at 12:05 p.m. tomorrow.
