Philippe Scores Fourth Pole in a Row
Lexington, Ohio - May 21, 2005-- Proving himself the fastest qualifier in the 2005 Formula BMW USA Championship for the fourth time in a row, 15-year old BMW Junior and Rookie driver Richard Philippe (Team Autotecnica) took the pole for Round 4. Improving over his Round 3 pole time by almost one-half second, he broke his own qualifying record with a lap of 1:25.789 minutes around the 2.258- mile Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Kevin Lacroix (AIM Autosport) improved from his fourth starting position in yesterday's Round 3 qualifying session and will start next to Philippe on the front row. It was the best qualifying effort to-date for the Overall and Rookie Championship points leader. Reed Stevens (HBR Motorsport Team USA) set the third fastest time (1:26.253) to make the first all-BMW Junior, and all-Rookie top- three qualifying of the season.
Highlighting the level of competition in 2005, the top 14 cars are separated by less than 1.2 seconds. The quickest Rookies in today's qualifying session were Philippe (P1), Lacroix (P2), Stevens (P3), Justin Moon (P4) and Race Johnson (P6).
"The qualifying went very well", said a confident Philippe. "It was not easy to get a clear lap early in the session. We came in and out of the pits a few times just to get a gap and put a good lap in. It worked out - four poles! That was what we were expecting, to be on pole every time and to win every race. We need to win - we need the points and we need the victories."
Lacroix said, "It was not too bad, a lot better than yesterday. We have a few things to improve to go faster in the race. I had the pole for a few minutes, but I knew that I was not fast enough to keep the pole for the session. I am sure that we will get a better setup for the race."
Stevens added, "We worked on the car and made some changes for today because we want to be back to where we want to be - always in the top-three. The car was quite a bit better than for yesterday's qualifying. By the end of the session it was pretty close to where I would like to have it, but there is still a little more work to do for the race."
The Round 3 race is scheduled to start at 3:35 p.m. today. Sunday's Round 4 race is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m.
