Woodcliff Lake, NJ - May 14, 2007-- Miller Motorsports Park, in Tooele, Utah, will be the site of the opening two rounds of the 2007 Formula BMW USA Championship on May 17th - 18th as some 20 young competitors will line up to begin the fourth season of the world's leading entry-level Formula racing series.
Already graduating more than 60 drivers in the previous three years, Formula BMW USA will again showcase some of the best and brightest young drivers at some of North America's most prestigious circuits.
Miller Motorsports Park 2.25-mile, 14-turn East Circuit will no doubt prove a challenge to those making their first Formula BMW USA start and the 13 new drivers will have to make the most of the May 16th pre-event test day. Returning teams and drivers Yannick Hoffman, Sebastian Saavedra, Robert Thorne, Maxime Pelletier, Phillip Major, Jordan Dick, Daniel Morad, Race Johnson and Steven Guerrero may have an advantage from a two-day official test at Miller in 2006, but early season testing at Road Atlanta and Virginia International Raceway have shown the freshmen will give the sophomores a run.
Morad, the highest finishing (4th) Formula BMW USA driver in last year's Formula BMW World Final, Saavedra and Johnson have proven the quickest so far this year with new drivers Esteban Gutierrez, Alexander Rossi and 2007 BMW Junior Jeffrey Petriello also showing early speed.
While everyone's immediate goal is to get a good jump in the points towards this year's titles, as importantly, all drivers will be taking the first major step of their motorsport careers. With the outstanding performances of many Formula BMW USA alumni, especially Graham Rahal, a 2004 FBUSA Junior, in the Champ Car World Series and 2006 FBUSA Champion Robert Wickens in the Champ Car Atlantic Series this season, the track to success races right through Formula BMW USA.
The chase for the championship begins after one additional test day on Wednesday, May 16 with two practice sessions on Thursday. Round 1 qualifying is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. that afternoon. The Round 2 qualifying session will be held at 8:00 a.m. Friday with the Round 1 race scheduled to start at 1:45 p.m. The Round 2 race is scheduled to start at 11:10 a.m. Saturday.
