Vietoris on course for pole position at the DELL Formula BMW World Final.
Valencia (Spain), November 25, 2006... Christian Vietoris (GER) of Josef Kaufmann Racing is on his way to securing an excellent starting position for Sunday's DELL Formula BMW World Final. At Valencia's "Circuit de Catalunya" on Saturday, the 17- year-old won two qualifying heats. After four out of six intermediate rounds, he holds the lead in the overall standings, which will determine the grid positions for the final race. The victor will win a Formula One test with the BMW Sauber F1 Team.
The fight for pole position is far from over, however. Josef Král (CZE), who is also racing for team boss Josef Kaufmann, won the second heat and finished runner-up behind Vietoris in round four. In the intermediate rankings, the 16-year-old also is the nearest rival to his team-mate. Mika Mäki (FIN/Eifelland Racing) claimed the fourth victory of the day after winning the Super Pole Competition in the morning. In the race meeting between heat groups B and D, he proved his fine form with another victory at the 4.005-kilometre track.
"In this morning's Super Pole contest I was a few tenths of a second behind Mika Mäki," said Vietoris, "but then it worked out perfectly for me in the two qualifying heats. I had very good starts, which enabled me to open up a lead over the following cars quite quickly. I'm the only driver who has zero points on my tally. So I'm confident about achieving a promising starting position for the final."
While Vietoris was able to control the pace from the front for his two race wins, Král had to fight hard for his finishes. He said: "In my first race I was trailing Stefano Coletti after the start. He is a great driver, so it was difficult to pass him. But I finally managed it, and now I'm just happy that I was able to win this round. In race two, Christian Vietoris was clearly faster than the rest of us. My goal was therefore to defend second place. And I succeeded in doing just that."
Mäki had been determined to win the first heat, but in the end he had to make do with third place. "In my first race I had some problems with the clutch at the start and lost some positions," explained the young gun. "In the second heat, however, it went a lot better. But we have to keep working on our pace if we want to have a chance tomorrow. It would be great to start from the first row." The two final heats are scheduled for 9:00hrs local time (8:00hrs GMT). The driver with the lowest points tally in the overall rankings will start the DELL Formula World Final from pole at 14:30hrs (13:30hrs GMT).
