Ferrari Challenge at Sonoma - race weekend report

The North American Ferrari Challenge visited Wine Country this past weekend for two races at Sonoma Raceway.

Sonoma, CA – It was a remarkable day for drivers and fans alike to enjoy the splendors of the Prancing Horse at Sonoma Raceway for the first day of Ferrari Challenge racing. Dominating the first round of was Mark McKenzie of Ferrari of Houston.

Starting in pole position, McKenzie held strong throughout the race, scoring the fastest race lap and increasing his distance in front of Harry Cheung (Ferrari of Beverly Hills) who finished second. Finishing third overall and in the Trofeo Pirelli class was Ricardo Perez (Ferrari of Houston).

Victory for the Coppa Shell drivers was awarded to the poleman Chris Ruud, already a winner in the first round of the season, in Daytona, who remained in constant battle with his teammate from Ferrari of Beverly Hills, Jon Becker. The two were closely followed by James Weiland of Ferrari of San Francisco who finished third on today’s podium.

Race Two

The drivers showcased pure driving exhilaration in Race 2 at Sonoma Raceway. Polesitter Harry Cheung of Ferrari of Beverly Hills fought a fierce battle against Ricardo Perez of Mexico (Ferrari of Houston).

Between the sharp turns of the track, Perez ultimately grabbed the victory for Trofeo Pirelli and overall, with the Ockey brothers of Ferrari of Ontario, Damon and Ryan, following suite. The race was action packed with the first five cars in just 2.705 seconds.

Leading the Coppa Shell classification was Jon Becker, beating his teammate from Ferrari of Beverly Hills, Chris Ruud, by less than a second creating a reversed order of Race 1 results. Finishing in third place was, just like Saturday, James Weiland of Ferrari of San Francisco keeping the Coppa Shell field in tight contention.

The next round for the North American Ferrari Challenge takes place at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California from May 16-18.
