Bridgestone goes soft on GP2
Bridgestone Motorsport is pleased to announce its tyre compound allocation choices for the 2009 GP2 Series with a move to softer compound allocations at races in order to make racing more challenging and exciting.
Of the ten locations on the 2009 calendar, tyres one position softer from 2008 will be taken to four venues, Barcelona, Istanbul, Valencia and Spa. The Nurburgring returns to the GP2 Series calendar after a year away, and will see tyres one position softer than those used in 2007. Monaco, Silverstone and Monza have no change to their allocations. The season will end at the new Autodromo do Algarve and this will be the first time that the GP2 Series has visited this venue.
The compound range of Bridgestone Potenza GP2 slick racing tyres for 2009 will consist of medium, soft and super soft compounds. The medium compound is the same as that used in 2008, whilst the soft and super soft compounds have been modified from those used in 2008.
The Bridgestone-supported GP2 Series enters its fifth season in 2009 and Bridgestone has been the official tyre supplier since the championship's inception.
Quote from Hirohide Hamashima - Bridgestone Director of Motorsport Tyre Development
"Tyre management is a crucial skill for any young driver so by making our compound allocations softer we are bringing this skill to the fore in the GP2 Series. We have worked with the GP2 Series organisers and changed our soft and super soft compounds to allow a greater amount of progressive degradation, which will mean more exciting racing and will make tyre management a primary focus for the drivers. We are proud to be associated with the GP2 Series and lessons learnt by drivers here are very applicable to Formula One, where two different tyre compounds are used in each race. Any F1 driver who struggles to adapt to this year's slick tyres will be looking over their shoulders at the upcoming talent in the GP2 Series who are showing good use of their Bridgestone slick tyres."
