Bridgestone Motorsport's GP2 Series Report

Charles Pic (Arden International) won the first race of the 2010 GP2 Series in Barcelona, on Bridgestone's hard compound dry tyres, and Fabio Leimer (Ocean Racing Technology) was victorious in race two.

Bridgestone's Potenzas demonstrated low wear rates and consistent performance throughout the weekend. The tyres rewarded the drivers who achieved the most suitable car set-up for the high speed corners experienced at the Circuit de Catalunya, in particular turn three.

Saturday's 37 lap feature race was an action packed season opener in which pole sitter Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) was taken out at the first corner by Christian Vietoris (Racing Engineering). All drivers pitted at least once as per the regulations, with Charles Pic stopping to change his tyres on lap 12. Giacomo Ricci (DPR) finished second after starting twelfth on the grid, with Dani Clos (Racing Engineering) taking third place. The point for fastest lap went to Sam Bird (ART Grand Prix).

Sunday's 25 lap sprint race was led by Leimer throughout, the rookie having started from the front of the field due to the usual reverse grid format for race two. Rapax team-mates Luiz Razia and Pastor Maldonado finished second and third respectively. Leimer also took the final point of the weekend for quickest lap and managed his tyres well to stay ahead for the full duration of the race.

Pic leads the drivers' championship with 10 points ahead of Leimer on 8. Ricci is currently third in the championship also on 8 points. Rapax leads the teams' championship with 14 points from Arden International on 10. Ocean Racing Technology is in third position with 8.

The second round of the 2010 GP2 Series will be held in Monaco, 13-15 May, with Bridgestone's super soft racing slick being allocated for this next event.

Quote from Hirohide Hamashima - Director of Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development

"Congratulations to Charles Pic for winning Saturday's entertaining race and maximising the potential of his tyres, keeping Giacomo Ricci in second place. Well done also to Fabio Leimer for his first ever GP2 victory. Bridgestone's hard compound tyre showed consistency and reasonable degradation throughout race one. In Sunday's race, tyre degradation became an influencing factor due to there being no pit stops, with rear degradation resulting in most drivers experiencing a slight oversteer balance towards the end of the race. Sam Bird provided much excitement in GP2 during the weekend, setting the fastest lap on Saturday and battling with Dani Clos and iSport International's Oliver Turvey in race two."
