FORMULA MASTER CHAMPION ON FRONT ROW IN GP2

2007 Formula Master Champion Jerome D'Ambrosio will start today's GP2 Asia feature race in Bahrain from the front row after securing second in yesterday's qualifying session.

The DAMS driver posted a best lap of 1:41.476, just 0.125 seconds behind pole position, with team-mate Kamui Kobayashi in third place. D'Ambrosio now hopes to use his team's form to win today's race.

"I took advantage of the break in the championship to do a lot of work," said the Belgian driver who won five races during his season with Formula Master. "First of all, in terms of physical fitness by fine-tuning my training. Then I tackled the technical aspect through long discussions with the DAMS engineers; I think all this effort's paid off. The car's balance was perfect and I really enjoyed myself behind the wheel in qualifying. My aim is to win the long event, but I want to drive my own race, do my best and not put too much pressure on myself."

An array of Formula Master drivers are taking part in this week's GP2 Asia rounds; recurrent racers Marco Bonanomi, Vitaly Petrov, Earl Bamber, Fabrizio Crestani and Giacomo Ricci are all present, as is newly-promoted Frankie Provenzano.

The 22-year-old Formula Master regular will make his GP2 race debut with team Trident Racing after qualifying in 24th place.

"The thing we are most happy in my first day in GP2 is the progression; I was improving lap after lap and lowered my time with each outing," said Provenzano who raced in both 2007 and 2008 Formula Master seasons. "I had to learn the track as well as get used to a new car so I think I had a good start, especially after four months away from racing! I hope to finish well in the first race so that I can gain grid positions in Saturday's race."

Provenzano brings the total number of Formula Master drivers having competed in GP2 races to thirteen, since the Formula Master Series first took to the track in May 2007. The Series' 2009 season will begin with an official test on 1-2 March in Valencia, Spain.
