Ocean Racing Technology misses the points by 4 seconds

In Valencia, Ocean Racing Technology had its best race weekend of the 2011 GP2 Main Series. After a month-long break, the Portuguese team showed itself to be competitive and totally concentrated on its technical and sporting objectives. The high point of its competitiveness was embodied by Kevin Mirocha's 8th place finish in the second race.

Kevin Mirocha and Ocean Racing Technology worked very hard in Valencia and their work was rewarded by their best performance of the year. Despite the handicap of racing on Valencia's very complex street track for the first time, Kevin was able to optimize an excellent strategy and moved up from 26th place to 12th place in the first race. On Sunday, the German rookie was in 7th position up to the last meters of the 23 lap race, but was overtaken by Jules Bianchi, the Scuderia Ferrari reserve driver at the finish line. He missed out on 6th place and the team's first point by 4 seconds. "It was a good weekend. I adapted to the circuit well and the car was competitive. The strategy we adopted was also very important to the final result and I have to say everything went well,"Mirocha declared. "In the second race, we had clutch problems but we were able to minimize their impact. I had a good start and I moved up a few places. I tried to fight off Bianchi but his tyres were in better condition and he was able to take advantage of that in the last corner. The weekend overall was positive. Hard work pays off and we made the right choices."

For Johnny Cecotto Jr, the Valencia meeting leaves a bitter taste in his mouth. The Venezuelan driver was a victim of several setbacks which prevented him from fighting for the lead on Saturday. He had an 8th place finish within his reach in the first race. It would have given him a point and the pole position for the second race, but a penalty for ignoring yellow flags pushed him out of the top 10. "It's totally thoughtless. I had just changed tyres and therefore, even decelerating under the yellow flags, it was normal for me to be faster than with worn tyres. It is fundamentally unfair because I could have finished in 7th or 8th place."

Johnny stalled on the starting grid in the second race and had to take off from the pits. "Obviously that compromised the race. The race was shorter and it was hard to move up many places."

The next GP2 Main Series races will be held on the Silverstone circuit in England, on July 9 and 10.
