Rapax Team Budapest Race 1 Report
Hungaroring
The seventh round out of nine of the 2011 GP2 Main Series entered its deciding stages today with the running of race 1 at the Hungaroring. The drivers of Rapax Team, Fabio Leimer and Julian Leal, respectively took-off from the 8th and 22nd position. The race proved quite linear, with the most notable variable being the tire wear. Leimer stayed close to the top spots for major part of the race, but was then slowed down after halfpoint by the left front tire wear. Fabio ended up in 11th place, while Leal paid the price of a slow start as he got stuck in traffic after take-off. His fastest lap, like happened before, has been among the best of the day, confirming an highly-valuable speed potential, clearly good for something more than today's 20th place. Following the results of today's race 1, Leimer will take-off from 11th, while Leal will be starting from row 10. The race, set for 10:30 AM, will benefit from a widespread live TV coverage, including RAI 2 in Italy.
Fabio Leimer “The start has been good, and in addition to that I hit a wide line at the first corner and got two spots back. I found myself in 6th behind Van Der Garde, and I was faster than him. Unfortunately, passing is not easy here at Budapest, especially without taking big risks. After the pit-stop, in which we replaced the rear tires, I started to suffer from a progressive left front wear and staying close to the points zone became quite impossible especially because it happened all of a sudden. It's a pity because I believe that both me and the team deserved something more today.”
Julian Leal “Unfortunately, my race started bad because I was off to a really tough start. Then at the first corner I was pushed on the grass and lost more positions. In the first laps I was fighting with Gonzalez, but after having passed him he went back in front with the yellow flags exposed. I got my position back with the drive-through assessed to him, but overall it hasn't been a race to remember.”
