The Frenchman set his best time of 1m23.269s at the end of his first stint, beating Markelov by less than a tenth.

Although Gasly failed to improve and had a hectic run by going wide three times, he stayed in the lead for rest of the session.

Markelov took second with Alex Lynn and top rookie Luca Ghiotto only 0.009s and 0.018s slower respectively.

Racing Engineering duo Norman Nato and Jordan King sandwiched sixth-placed Raffaele Marciello.

King narrowly finished ahead of Oliver Rowland and Antonio Giovinazzi as Sergey Sirotkin completed the top 10.
