With barely a break after last weekend's races at Hockenheim, Javier Villa returns to the wheel of the Racing Engineering Dallara GP2 this Friday for the 9th round of the championship. This time the location is the Hungaroring circuit, near Budapest and the site of the F1 Hungarian Grand Prix.
The track is one of the slower and trickier of the entire series, with Monaco the only track with slower average speeds, due to its tremendously twisty layout. Add to that the, usually, high temperatures at this time of year and the dusty and irregular surface of the track and it all means some hard work for both drivers and cars.
For Javier Villa his maiden race in Hungary arrives after a couple of promising showings last week in Germany. Despite the setup problems with the rear suspension of his car that weren't totally sorted, Villa shown at Hockenheim that when the car balance is good his pace is at the same level as the top group of drivers in the GP2 series. Villa's good lap times in the second half of Saturday's race and during his first laps on Sunday, comfortably among the top ten, are a good indication of the progresses Javier is making in his first season in GP2.
At the Hungaroring the young Spaniard and his team are aiming to continue with this kind of development that is their target for this season. The excellent laptimes set by Villa at the Monaco qualifying session, on a track more closely related to the Hungaroring as regards both layout and average speeds makes it not unrealistic to think about a mid-grid spot for the Asturian-born driver. However, as usual in the frantic GP2 qualifying session, a combination of luck, finding a traffic-free lap and a good setup, will be crucial to achieve a good result.
