AMAZING 3rd PLACE FOR LOPEZ IN QUALIFYING
Imola , 22nd April 2005 -- After the end of the free practice in the morning, when the 2 cars stopped on their 1st lap for electrical problems, all members of DAMS Team were not optimistic for the afternoon qualifying. As the drivers did not practice at all and the engineers had no information the aim was just to do the best and hope to have 1 car in the top 10. In these difficult circumstances Jose- Maria Lopez made an impressive qualifying session, using the first half to understand the car in this track and the second half to fit new tires and take an impressive 3rd place. Fairuz Fauzy, who had also the disadvantage to come in this track for the very first time, had to use the qualifying session to run as much laps as he could to gain experience for Saturday's race. He improved his lap times lap after lap, but with 30 minutes only he did not have enough track time to drive on the limit of the car.
Jose-Maria Lopez : "We had no practice this morning and we had very short time to find a good set up and try to drive at the limit of the car. Everything went fine except the brakes, I am quite surprised to be at this position and this is a big satisfaction for me and the team."
Fairuz Fauzy : "I did not expect much from this qualifying session, I did not have the opportunity to learn the track this morning so I had to do it this afternoon. Like Jose and other drivers I had brakes problems, so I am a little bit disappointed but there was not more to do in so difficult circumstances."
