Ocean Racing Technology fight for the pole
Chandhok and Parente with the front-runners in Istanbul
Ocean Racing Technology confirmed its promised potential from the first two rounds of the GP2 Main Series, mainly Monaco where one of their drivers was in control of the race before being cruelly struck down by a mechanical problems, in Turkey this afternoon when after dominating free practice Alvaro Parente and Karun Chandhok finished in the top eight in qualifying, a session where they constantly fought for pole position. However, in the final session, several yellow flags marred the outcome, dashing the hopes of both Ocean Racing Technology drivers to start on the front row of the grid, the two racers being the only ones in the first half of the field not to have been able to use their second set of tyres.
Therefore, Karun Chandhok will start from the third row of the grid while Alvaro Parente will start his first race of the weekend from seventh place.
This is the best qualifying result of the Portuguese team to date, however Karun and Alvaro both believe that it could have been even better. "We could easily have been in the top 3 as this morning as well as in qualifying we were always among the fastest," emphasised Chandhock, who was potentially on the first row of the grid after his first lap. "But the yellow flags did not allow us to benefit from our second set of tyres. Nevertheless, I think our race set-up is good and starting from the 3rd row should give us some perspective. The team has improved the car a lot since our debut in Barcelona. The front end is much more accurate and a several other details make the difference. We will do our best to secure a good result."
Best driver in free practice, teammate Alvaro Parente was third on his first set of tyres in qualifying but he too suffered the consequences of yellow flags which prevented him from improving his time in the second part of the session. "I was clocking a fast lap in the final minutes of the session but I was hampered by Pastor Maldonado in the last sector as he was so slow. Then the yellow flags came out and it ruined my performance just like they did for other drivers. Having said that, the 4th row of the starting grid is a good place to start and everything should be open during the race. The car was efficient as soon as we put it on track we proved that we are more and more competitive."
With Chandhok and Parente 35 and 61 hundredths off pole position respectively, Ocean Racing Technology will start the first Turkish race with the ambition of fighting for the victory.
