With King quickest, his teammate Norman Nato - who had topped the timesheets on Day 1 - was fifth, his benchmark from Tuesday running surpassed by 16 drivers.

The new best lap of the test, King's 1m24.429s, came in the morning session as the Briton overhauled Prema rookie Antonio Giovinazzi.

Nobuharu Matsushita, Giovinazzi's teammate Pierre Gasly and Nato were all within a tenth of a second of the Italian, with Sergey Sirotkin and Alex Lynn close behind as well, despite the former causing a red flag by clipping the barriers.

The afternoon, meanwhile, was headed by Rapax driver Gustav Malja, albeit the Swede's lap was almost two seconds slower than King's morning time.

Lynn was a close second, with Giovinazzi in third place.
