DPR CHASES POINTS FINISH IN FRENCH GP2 SERIES WEEKEND
David Price Racing (DPR) will return to racing action this weekend, with the third round of the Formula 1 supporting GP2 Series at the French Grand Prix in Magny Cours. Monaco hosted the previous round and after a three week break the teams then travelled to Paul Ricard in the South of France for a two day test. Moving on to Magny Cours the DPR team with drivers, Andy Soucek and Christian Bakkerud, are ready for the challenges ahead.
Soucek finished in 15th place at the Monaco round last month, but picked up a ten place grid penalty for a racing incident which he will serve this weekend, adding to the pressures for the young Austro-Spanish driver. Soucek knows the challenge he faces with his 10 place grid penalty, saying, "Losing 10 places wherever I qualify is going to be very tough, but we really need to finish in the points, so I'll still be trying for the quickest lap to be as close to an 11th place start as possible. We tested in Paul Ricard last week and that went quite well for me, and we used some of this time to focus on qualifying, so I hope that I can capitalise on this and we made some steps forward which I hope will be beneficial for Magny Cours"
Prior to this weekend, Soucek found time to test at the track in a World Series car and is hoping that this will be an advantage to him: "I tested here a couple of months ago in a World Series car, driving about 20 to 25 laps on old tyres and this gave me the chance to learn the track. The chicanes are quick, it's quite a demanding track and it's not going to be easy. I think the drivers in GP2 with F1 experience will find it a little less difficult, especially as we have so little practice time."
Team mate Bakkerud has not driven the French track explaining, "I've never been here before. I wanted to try and fit in a test but it wasn't possible, so I've just been learning from playing on the PlayStation, watching videos of previous races and concentrating on my fitness. That's as prepared as I can be, and I hope it won't take long to learn it on Friday."
He is also aiming for a points finish, commenting, "We need to get a decent result here. We still don't have any points and I really want to change that. I didn't have the best of tests in Paul Ricard, but I never go particularly well there. We did have some issues with the car which are hopefully now resolved, and I hope we can make a step forward this weekend."
The Magny Cours GP2 weekend starts with a half hour morning practice session and half hour afternoon qualifying session on Friday. The Feature race on Saturday afternoon is 41 laps long and the sprint race on Sunday morning takes the green flag for 14 laps.
