At just one second off the pole and one tenth away from 8th place, Javier Villa ended up 13th fastest in the incredible close qualifying session held this afternoon at Magny Cours (France).

Villa started the day with the 30 minutes of free practice where he was working on the car setup starting from the baseline achieved at last week's Paul Ricard testing which weren't as suitable to Magny Cours as was expected. After finishing 23rd in the free practice session, the improvement during the qualifying session was quite dramatic, with Javi setting a fastest lap two seconds better than the one scored in the morning, this allowed him to qualify 13th and get a spot on the seventh row of the grid for tomorrow's feature race.

Much more positive than the final position, in the middle of the timesheet, was how close Villa's times were to the fastest, with just one tenth separating him from the 8th place, which becomes his first target for tomorrow's race as it would give him the pole position for the Sunday race. To achieve that Javier will have to fight hard in the middle of this tough GP2 series grouping. Today laptimes showed once again how competitive the series is with the first 16 cars on the grid covered by just one second.

The car worked faultlessly the whole day which is another reason to be optimistic for Villa and his team. They are already looking forward to tomorrow's race where the young Spaniard has got a really good chance to shine after the good pace and steady improvement shown today.

Javier Villa's own words:

"Today everything went quite well, we are 13th and just one tenth behind the 8th placed car, we have been improving the whole day after being 23rd in free practice. The times are so close that if you drop your times by 2 or 3 tenths you are right with the leaders so that's what we are trying to do tomorrow and to achieve it we'll have to push from the start of the race."
