It was fifteenth position for Javier Villa in the qualifying session for the GP2 series held this afternoon at the Nurburgring. This position doesn't reflect the real chances of the Spaniard on the German track, as his best time was just eight tenths from a front row slot despite not running in perfect conditions in the final session due to yet more fuel pump troubles with his Dallara.

The day started with some unexpected complications for Villa and his GP2 rivals as the always unpredictable weather in the Eifel mountains played its part with a heavy storm that caused a red flag in the free practice session just a few minutes after its start. With no time to do more than three laps on a dry track the initial plan of using the 30 minutes of practice to fine tune the car setup was ruined. Instead, Javi was running quite well on a really damp track, gathering some wet weather experience that could be of great value if rain comes back at anytime during the weekend races.

When the time for qualifying arrived, the track had dried but this was the moment chosen by the car's fuel pump to have another of its unexpected failures. This is a situation that has been happening far too often this season and which left both driver and team really frustrated. Despite the problem, Villa and his engineer worked hard on improving the car setup while looking for the quickest possible lap time in order to place the Spaniard's car as high as possible on the grid. Notwithstanding all their efforts the changes tried on the setup with the qualifying already taking place weren't as good as hoped for, and Javi has to settle for 15th position even if his best time was just three quarters of a second slower than that necessary to get to the front row... such is the close competition in GP2 this season!

Setting this lap time, so close to the front runners, despite not running at 100% for many laps, and the positive feeling Javi carries over from last year at this same track means that both driver and team are optimistic for a good race tomorrow afternoon. Javi is intending to be fighting for a place among the top eight if everything works as planned

Javier Villa's own words: "In free practice it started to rain after just three laps so we focused on running in the wet and we did quite well. In qualifying the track was now dry and we made a few adjustments to the car but we didn't improved very much, as we also had some fuel pump problems from the beginning. Let's hope we can improve further tomorrow."
