Rene Binder with positive interim results after Monaco

After return from the Cote d’Azur Rene took his time for a chat about the world’s most fascinating F1-Circuit, his feelings for the upcoming races and just what his current mind-set is about the future…

Q: Racing in Monaco has been described as a helicopter flight in a living room by former world champion Nelson Piquet. So let us know your thoughts after you finished 7th and 6th in your debut races on this fascinating race circuit…

Rene Binder: „It is definitely the most extreme race circuit, you can imagine but in my opion the greatest challenge as well. You are permanently fighting with wheelspin and you are absolutely aware that you cannot afford to miss a breaking point. However, after a few laps I found my rhythm and managed to get a good feeling for the car and for its limits.“

Rene Binder: „I was not nervous at all, it was just a few rain drops before the start that caused some confusion. Actually, I tried to be very sensitive with the clutch, but obviously too sensitive. And there was another problem as I had an old pair of rear tyres on my car which made it quite difficult to defend my position against Sam Bird, who was the dominating driver in race 1. I had a lot of graining but that was just a result of our set-up compromise.“

Q: So, considering your first time in Monaco, you should be really happy?

Rene Binder: „Absolutely, it has been a great weekend for us and gives us a positive summary after the first four events of the 2013 GP2 season. I started in the points in Sepang, qualifying 7th on the grid, which was my first big highlight. Bahrain and Barcelona were not so good for us, even if I posted the 3rd fastest lap time on both circuits, but my maiden weekend in Monaco proved that we are basically competitive. So, generally speaking, we are on the right way and with the help of Venezuela GP Lazarus I am learning every day, developing my skills as a driver.“

Q: You are now heading into a a break of 5 weeks before the upcoming races at Silverstone. So what about your expectations…

Rene Binder: „I have only had a single day of testing in an F3 car over there, but I liked the track layout very much. It could be again a good place for us and I look forward to another Grand Prix with a lot of great fans as England is the mother land of racing.“

Q: Your uncle, Hans Binder, raced in F1 with Niki Lauda and James Hunt so how do you react when you are asked about your future…

Rene Binder: „Yes, my family has a long history in racing, but I still have to deliver if I want to get closer to my goals. My approach is as simple as that: There is a lot of hard work ahead of my but I believe in my chances and want to give my very best.“
