VITALY STARTS FROM THE FRONT ROW OF THE GRID, VALSECCHI FROM THE SIXTH.
GOOD PERFORMANCE FROM THE BARWA ADDAX IN THE OFFICIAL QUALIFIERS IN VALENCIA
The official qualifications for the first GP2 Series race took place this afternoon at the urban street circuit of Valencia in blisteringly hot conditions. Tomorrow's first race will start with the Barwa Addax Team drivers showing up well. Vitaly Petrov is on the front row of the grid with the second fastest time and Davide Valsecchi, making his debut with the team, finished twelfth.
Vitaly Petrov, after his second place is showing that he is still in magnificent form and that he will be one of the favourites for the drivers title right to the end of the season. Right from the very start of the session he set the second fastest lap time and seemed to be the only driver who could challenge the leader. He could have improved on his time, after a lengthy delay due to a red flag, but just when he had set the fastest time on the first sector he was forced to retire because of mechanical problems. This also coincided with a call by the stewards to the team to carry out a regulation test. He went back to the team pit and was unable to get back out on the track at the end of the session, due to the already mentioned mechanical failure.
Davide Valsecchi performed well considering that this is his debut drive with the Barwa Addax Team, and especially on a circuit with characteristics as unusual as the urban street circuit of Valencia. His meritorious twelfth position gives him options of getting into the points for tomorrow's first longer race. Curiously, both drivers repeated their positions of the morning's free practice session but with better lap times in the qualifications, particularly Davide, who managed to improve more than two seconds on his times registered in the morning session. It seems he is adapting very well to the task ahead.
Tomorrow the first race starts at 16.00 hrs local time and will be competed over 32 laps of the 5,440 metre circuit covering a distance of 174,080 Kms. As with all the longer first races, there will be a compulsory pit stop where the drivers must change at least two tyres.
