With the previous two versions used for three years each, the series will switch to new machinery for its seventh season since its inception in 2010.

On a drying track, it was Trident's Sandy Stuvik who topped the opening day of testing on Wednesday, in which one car per team was being used.

The conditions stayed difficult in the subsequent day, once again topped by Trident with another driver in Antonio Fuoco.

"This shakedown felt really good. It was not exactly the easiest conditions because it was raining all day today, but the car seems really good," the Ferrari protege commented.

"The engine is more powerful than last year. I think we have to wait until Estoril to see how the car behaves in dry conditions, but at the moment, it looks really good.

“It’s hard to compare this year’s car to last season’s because we never got to drive in wet conditions in 2015, but in general you can feel a bit more downforce and a bit more grip.

"I’m really looking forward to the first official test. Hopefully we will meet dry conditions then, but during this shakedown, we did a really good job with the team. We had no issues with the car. Things look very positive."

The test marked the debut of new team DAMS, with all three of its drivers Jake Hughes, Kevin Jorg and Santino Ferrucci all driving the car.

Ex-Caterham F1 driver Giedo van der Garde also made an appearance on the opening morning for Campos, thanks to his links to one of the Spanish team's signed drivers for the season, Steijn Schothorst.
